Glassine bags – the ideal packaging
Glassine bags are ideal for a wide range of packaging applications. Glassine is a smooth, semi-transparent paper that is naturally grease- and water-resistant. This makes the material suitable for packaging many different types of products, such as:
- Chocolate
- Biscuits
- Pastries
- Soaps
The material also feels pleasant to the touch and gives your product a unique appearance when used as packaging.
Glassine envelopes for collectors
As a collector, you want your products to remain in good condition. Glassine paper is therefore commonly used in photo albums and for storing collectable items. In addition to being naturally grease-resistant and water-repellent, the material helps protect the contents effectively.
Glassine envelopes are often used to package and store the following types of products:
- Stamps
- Cards
- Stickers
- Prints
- And much more!
Another advantage of glassine is that it protects the contents while still allowing them to remain visible. This means you can print and/or scanning your product without removing it from the bag.
How is glassine paper made?
Glassine is a type of paper that is usually made from the wood of coniferous trees. This wood is processed into cellulose pulp, which is then used to produce glassine paper.
The pulp is pressed intensively under high pressure between large steel rollers. This process creates a smooth, semi-transparent paper with a very dense and minimally porous structure. As a result, glassine paper is grease-resistant, reasonably moisture-resistant and suitable for both writing and printing.
Although glassine paper may look as though it has a grease-resistant coating, this is not the case. Glassine bags are grease-resistant because of the material’s highly compact fibre structure.
Glassine and the environment
Glassine paper is recyclable and can be processed through the paper recycling stream, provided that it is clean and free from excessive product residue.
Are you looking for an environmentally friendly bag that is completely transparent? Take a look at our range of PLA bags.
For packaging products in larger volumes, we also recommend stand-up pouches. You can choose from recyclable transparent stand-up pouches or view our kraft paper stand-up pouches.
Frequently asked questions about glassine bags
What is the difference between glassine and pergamyn?
Glassine and pergamyn are two names for the same material. Glassine is the English term. It is a smooth, dense and slightly transparent paper.
Are glassine bags suitable for food?
Yes, our glassine bags are suitable for direct contact with food. They are commonly used for chocolate, biscuits, sweets and other dry or slightly greasy products.
Are glassine bags grease-resistant?
Yes, glassine is naturally grease-resistant. No plastic coating is required. Its grease-resistant properties are created by the very dense structure of the paper.
Are glassine bags waterproof?
No, glassine is not waterproof. The material is somewhat moisture-resistant, but is not suitable for products that require a high moisture barrier.
Are glassine bags transparent?
Glassine is semi-transparent. This means that the contents of the bag remain partially visible, but the material is not completely transparent like a clear plastic film.
Can glassine bags be recycled with paper?
Yes, glassine is made from paper fibres and can be recycled through the paper recycling stream. Please take into account any contamination of the packaging and local waste separation guidelines.
