What is Bioplastic?

Bioplastic is a term often used in the packaging industry. It is a general term that refers to different types of plastics that are made from biological material and/or are biodegradable.

The biological material or raw materials for the production of bioplastics can be, for example, cane sugar, potatoes, maize, wheat or sugar beet. However, other plant materials are also used for the production of bioplastics. Some examples of bio-plastics are PLA and bio-PE. For more information on the latter two types of bio-plastics, please refer to: https://www.ecolinq.de/biobased-materialen.

Is Bioplastic the solution for the plastic soup?

Bioplastics hardly degrade and are therefore not the solution to the plastic soup in the sea. Although bio-plastics such as PLA and bio-PE are only industrially compostable and biodegradable, we recommend switching to bio-plastic. Because when you choose bio-plastic, you are choosing 100% plant-based packaging that has not used fossil fuels in its production. In addition, we are seeing more and more opportunities to return bio-plastics separately. For example, there are already waste processors that can recycle and/or compost bio-plastics.
